Trend Micro Inc, a specialist in Internet content security, announced an agreement to purchase online storage and data synchronization company Humyo, based in Leeds, UK. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Humyo offers automatic data synchronization of files to a secure online storage center across a business’ computers and Internet-connected devices. Their solution helps enable the organization of data and removes the manual effort of moving files from one PC to another.
Trend Micro said the acquisition will allow the company to expand its security promise to consumers and small businesses by affording them with secure backup, recovery and constant access. Through the alignment with Trend Micro the current users of Humyo products and services will have access to additional Internet content security choices and development of new features. Currently more than 700 thousand users store more than 350 million files in Humyo’s secure datacenters, and the company currently offers local telephone and e-mail support in three languages.
IT analyst firm IDC has estimated that the Internet storage backup market will achieve an annual growth rate of over 25 percent from 2009 to 2011. Eva Chen, CEO of Trend Micro, said Humyo’s online storage–basically a cloud technology–fits into their strategy of providing security from and for the cloud. “Humyo’s data synchronization technology — which allows multiple devices including PCs, Macs and smartphones to automatically backup to a common folder in the cloud so that consumer users can easily access their data from whatever device they have in hand — is a clear differentiator that helps to ensure that users’ files are always safe and secure as well as effortlessly organized," Chen said.

Using a Web browser, consumers and small businesses can protect, access and share files. Optionally, customers can download a client, which synchronizes files across all their computers and enables access to Humyo through an extra hard drive on their PC, even when offline. Using desktop software, Humyo users can continuously backup your selected files and folders by replicating any change on your local machine to the Humyo online storage platform.
"The growth in mobile devices, iPad and Internet-enabled televisions means people want access to what they want, when they want it, and on whatever device they have with them," said Dan Conlon, co-founder and managing director of Humyo. "Online storage with synchronization makes that happen. Google and Microsoft are behind the curve on this and by teaming with Trend Micro, known for its innovation and its global market presence, we’ll push the boundaries even further to make Trend Micro online storage the global choice."
