Businesses and organizations are increasingly turning away from outdated databases, looking for modern systems that can handle heavy workloads without interruption. At the same time, they need these systems to be flexible enough to support technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), which are essential for today’s demanding business applications.

To address this, Cockroach Labs has just announced a major upgrade to its high-performance distributed database. CockroachDB 24.2 comes with advanced AI features and a new service tier for its cloud-based platform.

Key features of CockroachDB 24.2

CockroachDB 24.2 is designed to be easy to use, highly scalable, and extremely secure. Key features include Vector Search, which is perfect for supporting generative AI applications and operational data. The database also now integrates with pgvector (a PostgreSQL extension that allows you to store, query, and index vectors) and offers a new tier for its cloud-based platform. These advancements point to an industry shift, and Cockroach Labs’ part in helping businesses transition their critical data to modern databases.

The growing importance of vector databases

As artificial intelligence and unstructured data continue to grow in importance, businesses are increasingly adopting vector databases to handle these workloads efficiently. CockroachDB 24.2 introduces advanced vector search capabilities making it a solid solution for similarity searches and recommendation systems.

According to Gartner, the adoption of vector databases is expected to skyrocket in the coming years, with over 30% of enterprises using them by 2026. This growth is driven by the need for efficient management of unstructured data and the increasing reliance on AI-powered applications.

CockroachDB offers a unique advantage by combining vector search functionality with its existing capabilities for high availability, security, and operational data management. This eliminates the need for multiple systems, streamlining data infrastructure and reducing potential security risks.

The importance of data control

With vector search becoming more common, the real difference lies in who controls your data. For businesses that handle sensitive information, CockroachDB offers a big advantage by managing both everyday data and the specific types of data used by AI tools and systems. As AI gets smarter, vector databases are crucial for making it work better and faster. CTOs should think carefully about how these technologies can help their business succeed.

“With CockroachDB’s Generic Query Plans now in preview, we’re excited about the potential to significantly reduce complex query latency and operational costs while maintaining the resilience we rely on,” said James Lupolt, database engineer at Hard Rock Digital, in a press release. “By optimizing query plans once and caching them for reuse, we can eliminate the need for re-optimization, lowering CPU usage, especially for complex JOINs and index lookups. This efficiency gain in 24.2 will help us scale faster and more cost-effectively.”

Key in Cockroach Labs’ latest innovations are updates to CockroachDB Cloud, a managed database service that provides an enterprise-grade cloud platform for data management. The new Standard tier offers businesses a way to consolidate workloads, reduce costs, and improve performance. Additionally, the platform now includes enhanced security and monitoring features.

The benefits of cockroachDB Cloud

CockroachDB Cloud offers three tiers: Basic, Standard, and Advanced. The Basic tier is a good starting point, while the Advanced tier is designed for larger, more complex deployments. With these options, the idea is that businesses can easily scale their database infrastructure as their needs grow.

“This streamlined, tiered approach eliminates the need for multiple disparate solutions, allowing organizations to consolidate their cloud strategies around a single, powerful platform that evolves with their needs,” said Peter Mattis, CTO/CPO of Cockroach Labs. “By unifying the customer experience and simplifying the deployment process, the updates to CockroachDB Cloud now minimize operational overhead and enhance agility, enabling businesses to focus on innovation and growth.”
